Product review: DuraScoop litter scoops

like many cat parents, cleaning the litter box is my least favorite thing to do. Don’t get me wrong, I do it diligently. It’s essential to keep the litter box clean. numerous unsuitable eliminatinon problems are caused by a box that isn’t kept clean enough, at least, not from the cat’s point of view.

Since I work from home, I pretty much scoop as soon as Allegra or Ruby deposit something in one of our two boxes (especially if it’s in the one best outside my office). Yes, they have me well trained – and Allegra is the official box supervisor. She always inspects the box after I’ve scooped to make sure I’ve done a good job.

I have yet to find a litter box scoop that I really like. I don’t like plastic scoops, I find that the litter sticks to many of them. I’ve actually been using a metal slotted spoon for numerous years, it really works well for me.

I was fascinated when I first saw the DuraScoop® litter scoops, and I asked the company whether they’d send me a couple to test.

I received the DuraScoop® original, a jumbo sized metal scoop made from cast aluminum, which, according to the company, won’t bend or flick. I don’t see how it possibly could – it’s pretty sturdy. It has a comfortable grip and the deal with is short enough so you can get all around the box without bumping into the sides. It worked well, and what little litter stuck to it came off easily.

I also received the smaller DuraScoop® Mini, which is also made out of metal and covered with a non-corrosive, powder coated finish. It was simpler to maneuver than the larger scoop, and also got the job done well. Litter did stick to this one a little bit much more than to the original.

I liked both scoops. I choose the smaller one for simpler maneuverability, but the original also does a terrific job.

For much more information, please check out the DuraScoop® website.

The cats of Curlz and Swirlz give a Paw of approval to both these scoops, too! Teri purchased both styles (using the smaller one when we travel) and has had them over 5 years and they are good as new still! She will never go back to the old plastic kind ever again (She calls them her ‘garden trowels’, hahameow!)

Wow, these seem like the Rolls Royce of litter scoops. how sharp is the edge for scraping corners? in some cases I resort to a metal spatula.

It does a pretty good job with the corners, Layla. the best trick I learned from one of my cat pals is to use a putty knife to scrape litter clumps away from the sides of the box and from corners. works better than anything else I’ve ever used for that.

Ingrid, my mother has had these litter scoops before and I love how industrial the metal one feels and looks, but when it concerns scooping I have a preferred one – the Litter Lifter – and if they made that sucker in metal, now that would be cool.

If the Litter Lifter were made from metal, I might like it better, Jenny.

I discovered these scoops a few years ago (original size) and have been using them exclusively ever since. I love them and think they are worth every penny I paid. They clean up nicely, they’re durable, and they allow me to do some major litter digging to get the deposits left by the cats who firmly believe they should dig to china to bury their deposits.

I’ll have to keep an eye out for the small ones, as I could see where they would be helpful in the smaller litter boxes.

What is it about cats feeling they have to dig all the way to the bottom of the box, right, Bridget?
